Original inks for a page from a graphic novel I’m working on. I’ll have a lot of original pages and drawings at the Skirball talk I’m participating in with Sina Grace, Hope Larson and Nick Thorburn. Sequential Smarts - the best thing ever.

Inspired by the illustrative world of Gary Baseman as explored in the exhibition Gary Baseman: The Door Is Always Open, attend this panel of graphic novelists as they discuss the conceptual underpinning of contemporary graphic storytelling and L.A.’s central place in the world of the graphic novel.

Like Gary Baseman, many graphic novelists use illustration to depict fantastic worlds of their own making. Panelists Sina Grace (Not My Bag and Li’l Depressed Boy), Hope Larson (A Wrinkle in Time, Who Is AC?), Nick Thorburn (author of What a Gas and lead singer of the band Islands), and Malachi Ward(Expansion, Utu, and Ritual) discuss their work and the world of the graphic novel. A Q&A and book signing follow the program.

Sponsored by The Skirball Cultural Center, and The Secret Headquarters, this is going to be an event to remember. All attendees get a limited edition print of the image above (signed by all four panelists).

Your gouache work is sublime, do you mind me asking what materials you use?

I don’t use anything too fancy. The gouache is designer rather than acrylic, the brand I usually use is Daler Rowney. My brushes for painting are just an assortment of cheap stuff, I don’t have any brand loyalty there. Ideally I paint on a really thick, really soft paper. Not anything with a lot of tooth like watercolor paper. I don’t paint regularly enough to have honed in on the specific products I like to use.

The work you produce is fantastic. I recently discovered you was curious about your relationship with Matt. Does he write and you illustrate? What exactly is the dynamic? I think working collaboratively with artists is a great idea.

The way Matt Sheean and I collaborate has evolved since we started working together in 2010. The current project is collaborative the whole way through. Matt and I talked about the overall plot and characters for some time, eventually refining outlines to the point that we could begin thumbnailing/writing the pages. We split that duty, Matt would thumbnail one sequence, I’d thumbnail the next. We then go over the whole thing together and do pretty extensive edits to the layouts and dialogue. Matt pencils, I edit pencils. I ink, Matt edits the inks. Coloring we split too, Matt usually gets that started.

It’s hard for me to imagine working this closely with any one else on a big project. Sensibilities and skills have to be complementary. For Matt and I it happens really naturally. I think it also helps that we have our own comics that we’re heavily invested in.
